EVERY LITTLE HELPS
Throughout the time leading up to the start of our challenge in December 2019, Hell Oar High Water will be not only raising funds for our adventure but we are also aiming to raise £50,000 for each of our three charities below.
Centrepoint is the UK's leading charity for homeless young people. Together with their partners, they support 9,200 young people every year. They work with homeless 16-25 year olds and every day they support more than 150 young people in Bradford, giving them a health assessment and plan support for their individual mental and physical health needs. CentrePoint start them on a path to more independence and a job. Centrepoint has been working in Bradford since 2013 - on average support over 500 young people every year in Bradford alone.
Homelessness is not only a housing problem. There are lots of reasons why young people become homeless, including family breakdown and mental health issues. More than 150,000 young people ask for help every year.
Based at the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), the Bradford Hospitals Charity (BHC) Neonatal Unit looks after around 600 babies per year which includes: pre-term babies and full-term babies who may be very poorly after birth. The Unit has been a regional centre for many years and provides all levels of newborn medical care, including intensive care to babies from Bradford and across the northern half of the UK. Women may be referred during pregnancy when very early birth is anticipated or babies transferred to Bradford after delivery in the local hospital for specialist care.
1 baby in 10 needs additional medical care in the newborn period with 1 in a 100 needing intensive care. The Unit can accommodate between 12 and 14 intensive care babies and is constantly full to capacity.
